Lovre Kalinic, who joined in January, was substituted at half time against West Brom.

Kalinic sustained an impact injury to the head as a result of a coming together with Albion player Jake Livermore.

The Croation international goalkeeper was forced off at the break, being replaced by current Villa number two Jed Steer.

On the injury and Kalinic’s first half performance in the defeat to Albion, Smith told the official site:

He got a knock on the head and he’s come from a league where the goalkeepers are more protected.

He was dizzy at half-time.

I don’t think it was a factor in the goal. He was dizzy but I wouldn’t have put it down to that.

Assuming that Kalinic passes concussion related medical tests, he is expected to feature at Villa’s next game away at Stoke.

Villa have struggled in the goalkeeping department.  The poor Orland Nyland is a long term injury absentee whilst Mark Bunn is widely acknowledged as unfit for purpose.  Jed Steer, repeatedly shipped out on loan or injured, thus finds himself as Villa’s back-up.
