UCL Knock Out Phase

Following victory over Celtic, Villa finished in 8th place and automatically qualified for the knock-out stages of the competition. This meant one less fixture for Unai Emery’s men, who would go on to comfortably defeat Club Brugge (6-1) over two legs in the Round of 16.

Villa then faced their sternest test in the shape of Paris St-Germain. Despite taking the lead, Villa fell to a 3-1 defeat at the Parc Des Princes, succumbing to a late third goal that would ultimately decide the tie.

The return leg at Villa Park was a dramatic and scintillating encounter, with Emery’s side seemingly dead and buried, mounting an unthinkable second-half comeback. In the latter stages, Villa missed glorious chances with Ezri Konsa and Marco Asensio, and despite winning 3-2 on the night, went out of the competition.

PSG would go on to win the competition and be crowned European Champions, emphatically sweeping aside Inter Milan 5-0 in the final.

Tickets

Tickets for all matches could only be purchased via the club’s official ticketing page. The club took the unpopular decision to significantly increase ticket prices for Champions League fixtures, resulting in objections from supporters. This price high was well documented and highlighted in the national press.

Since the beginning of the 2024 campaign Villa moved to an all-digital ticketing system. Demand for Champions League tickets was high, and supporters were reminded to be on their guard for websites and social media accounts offering seats. The club has an official ticketing support team on X (Twitter).

Do not purchase tickets you cannot confirm the authenticity of or from sources which you cannot verify.

Ticket pricing: Away ticket prices for 2024/2025 were capped by UEFA at £50.50 (€60). This cap applied only to visiting supporters and NOT home fans.

Champions Of Europe

Aston Villa’s triumph in the 1981-82 European Cup is a defining moment in the club’s history. This remarkable achievement took place on May 26, 1982, in Rotterdam, Netherlands, when Villa faced Bayern Munich, one of Europe’s football giants in the final.

The journey to the final was not easy, as Villa had to overcome strong opponents such as Dynamo Berlin and Anderlecht. The final itself was a tense and closely contested match. Villa’s victory was largely credited to a resolute defensive display and the heroics of substitute goalkeeper, Nigel Spink, who came on early in the match after Jimmy Rimmer was injured. Spink, who had little first-team experience, delivered a memorable performance, making several crucial saves to keep Bayern at bay.

The match was ultimately decided by a single goal scored by Peter Withe in the 67th minute. Tony Morley delivered a cross into the box, which Withe managed to convert, with the ball bouncing off the post and into the net. This goal secured a 1-0 victory for Aston Villa, making us the fourth English club to win the European Cup.

Villa’s victory remains a historic achievement, as it is the pinnacle of the club success in European football. As supporters, we continue to celebrate this iconic moment, which solidified Villa’s place among Europe’s elite teams at that time.
