Aston Villa Transfer News – Danny Ings Available As Eight Players Released

Villa’s summer overhaul continues with clubs having confirmed their retained players lists, confirming that that eight players have been released.

Most notable amongst the list of departures are Irish international Conor Hourihane and former England international Ashley Young.

For Hourihane, who has become increasingly peripheral figure after two seasons largely on loan at Swansea and Sheffield United, it brings to a close a productive chapter in his career.

The midfielder is infamous for having climbed the football league ladder as a player, and will be remembered as an important part of Villa’s promotion winning side in 2019. Indeed, the 31 year old proved to be one of the more effective signings at a time (2017) when the club looked particularly listless in The Championship. Hourihane departs having made 151 appearances, scoring 29 goals and providing 23 assists.

Less clear is the future of Ashley Young, who it’s known was offered a contract and that Gerrard wished to stay at the club. The versatile and experienced midfielder turns 37 in July and looked to be in decent shape despite his advancing footballing years. It may be for this reason that Young exits, with game-time at Villa Park likely to be limited given a raft of new signings and competition for places throughout the squad. However, don’t be surprised if Young re-appears at B6 either.

In a surprise rumour to re-appear, it has been suggested that Danny Ings could be moved on with Steven Gerrard pondering adding another striker to Villa’s ranks.

Ings only arrived at Villa Park last summer, and despite starting brightly, became bogged down with both injuries and finishing woes in front of goal. Former club Southampton, newly promoted Bournemouth and Brighton are reportedly keeping tabs upon the 29 year old attackers availability.

This is a story that has popped up a couple of times since the end of the season, but with little in the way of concrete sources, remains dubious. Whilst Villa certainly need to get sharper in front of goal, Ings’ top flight goalscoring record is strong and it would be considered a real surprise to see the £25m striker moved on after just one season at the club.
