Aston Villa Transfer Rumour – Battle For James Tarkowski’s Signature

Villa have a reputation for moving quickly on transfer dealings, but the Championship patches haven’t even been sewn into Burnley’s kit following relegation yet.

Still, that doesn’t appear to have put us or Everton off, with reputable reports that Villa have made enquiries for James Tarkowski.

The 29 year old is a free agent and out of contract this summer and despite Burnley’s relegation, is amongst very few in the squad held in high regard.

Tarkowski fits the bill for Villa’s stated interest in “opportunistic” signings, with Callum Chambers’ smart purchase from Arsenal a recent example that springs to mind. However, some might rightly raise an eyebrow at purchasing a relegated sides defender, but then, Burnley’s rearguard conceded 4 fewer goals than Man Utd this term.

What interested parties might stand to save in transfer fee, they’ll need to match in wages. Tarkowski’s wage demands are understood to be in the region of £90,000 a week.

From Villa’s perspective, defensive cover and strength in depth with experience would be beneficial. We have looked short at times, especially when enforced changes due to injury has reared its head.

The squad is likely to see some shake-up too. Kortney Hause is realistically a back-up despite signing a new deal and Gerrard will be conscious that Ezri Konsa’s ACL injury will keep him out for 3/4 months, although fortunately not as bad as first feared. This leaves club Captain Tyrone Mings and the impressive Chambers as the most probable first choices.

For now, Tarkowski will be in high demand, and we will have to watch and wait to see whether Villa get the deal over the line or move on to other targets.
