One of few positives from Norwich’s disastrous return to the Premier League during 2020/21 was England Under-21 defender Max Aarons.
Aarons is a promising right fullback, who also has the capability to burst down the flank, thus offering something going forward too.
MAX AARONS
Dean Smith has a number of difficult decisions to make this summer, not only in strengthening the squad as a whole, but in improving wherever possible.
It cannot be overlooked that despite an upturn from a defensive perspective post-lockdown, that Villa ended the season with the second leakiest back-line in the entire division. Tyrone Mings is arguably the only player amongst them who could reasonably consider his position safe.
It’s no surprise to see Villa linked to Aaron’s, with our right back position often troublesome. Frederic Guilbert impressed on his return from a injury, but has spent long spells out of the team. The Frenchman when in the team, did struggle for form.
Ahmed Elmohamady, whilst offering a dangerous cross and bags of international experience, is now 32 and sometimes found defensively wanting.
The 20 year old Aarons will not come cheap though, with the latest reports indicating that Norwich would expect a transfer fee in the region of £18 million. For comparison, Villa shelled out £11.5 million for 23 year old left back Matt Targett last season from Southampton.
Aarons appeared 40 times for The Canaries last season, whilst also being a key figure during their successful promotion from The Championship the year prior. Villa will need to be mindful of competition for the England Under-21 star, with Bayern Munich also expressing a keen interest in securing his signature.
