Villa Player Ratings – Aston Villa 2-1 Leicester City – Konsa Strikes

Aston Villa 2-1 Leicester 5 December 2021

Villa player ratings after a hard-earned and determined 2-1 win over Leicester City at Villa Park.

EMI MARTINEZ

The Argentine is a reliable figure between the sticks. Martinez earned his money with a superb second half save, acrobatically tipped a header over the bar. Distribution wasn’t perfect, but we’ll let him off.

MATTY CASH

Endured a torrid time in the first half as Leicester probed repeatedly. Never gave up, but must have been pleased to see the half-time whistle. Much improved in the second half, but composure is required when it comes to crossing when well placed.

ASHLEY YOUNG

Overcame a couple of loose early passes to put in another solid performance. Young was the ideal experienced head, with a number of calm pieces of play to find a pass whilst under pressure. Did well as Villa worked to close the game out and always talking.

TYRONE MINGS

A steady display from Mings who was a huge physical presence alongside Konsa. Still Marmite for some, but this was a a decent 100th Premier League appearance for the Villa captain.

EZRI KONSA

It remains remarkable that Konsa is yet to have received an international call-up. The defender was outstanding against Brendan Rodgers’ side. Made a vital interception at Leicester closed in on goal in the 1st half and was rock solid at the heart of Villa’s defence. Capped an excellent performance with 2 goals to bring home the points for Gerrard.

DOUGLAS LUIZ

Found himself in a midfield battle again, but at times looked more than capable. Luiz struggled in the 1st half, losing possession 14 times. Improved in the second, but tired and was replaced by Morgan Sanson.

JOHN MCGINN

Another tireless and intense display from the Scottish international. McGinn was a physical menace in midfield, holding up play and driving on any number of occasions. Played a sublime ball to Watkins in the second half. Great to watch.

EMI BUENDIA

Game by game it’s coming together for Buendia. At times the ball appears as though it’s super-glued to the end of the midfielder’s toe. Not everything comes off, but his interplay, vision and eye for a pass are a real asset. Going in the right direction.

MARVELLOUS NAKAMBA

Nakamba is a different player under Gerrard. This is a cliche, but Nakamba’s contribution to disrupt Leicester was excellent. A number of important challenges across the game, never stopped running and gave everything.

JACOB RAMSEY

Unbelievably denied a goal in the first half when the officials disallowed his goal. As bizarre as the decision was Ramsey scooping a golden opportunity high over the bar later in the game. Looks a class act and maturing into potentially something quite exciting.

OLLIE WATKINS

Another hard-working performance from Watkins. He put the miles in once more and demonstrated some first class hold up play. Unlucky in the second half when slid in, only for Schmeichel to save well with his feet. Relentless.

Subs: Carney Chukwuemeka; youngster took a few minutes to bed into the game, but contributed a couple of smart moments as the game was shut down. Morgan Sanson; limited input but tasked with containing visitors on the right in the final minutes. Axel Tuanzebe; supported the defence in the last few minutes.
