Internationals: Trezeguet To Join Egypt For AFCON Tournament At Risk

Trezeguet Egypt AFCON 2021

Villa midfielder Trezeguet is set to link up with Egypt ahead of the start of the African Cup of Nations kicking off in January 2021.

The 27 year old has been sidelined with a nasty ACL injury since breaking down against Liverpool last season. Trezeguets recovery has been long and arduous, in what has been an almost 9 month absence from the first team.

Trezeguet re-appeared at the beginning of the month (December 2021) for the Under-23’s, converting a penalty in a 3-1 victory over Birmingham City (PL2).

Trezeguet, well regarded for his high energy work rate, has 9 goals and 5 assists since joining Villa in 2019. He is credited with scoring vital goals in the clubs miraculous survival during our first season back in the Premier League.

Although the Egyptian is yet to feature under Steven Gerrard, he has been named in the national sides provisional squad for AFCON 2021. The former Al Ahly player stands to be Villa’s only representative at the competition with Marvelous Nakamba forced to withdraw due to injury and Bertrand Traore lacking match fitness.

There still remains doubts about AFCON taking place, with organisers having to quell rumours that they were considering moving the tournament from Cameroon due to a surge in Covid numbers in the region. As the pandemic enters a new wave, it’s now being more widely reported that the tournament could even be postponed.
