Villa have announced the signing of Harvey Elliott from Premier League champions Liverpool. Elliot, just 22 years of age, will arrive on loan for the 2025/25 campaign with Villa having agreed a deal to make the signing permanent, subject to appearances. A fee of circa £35m has been widely reported.

Elliot already has an impressive CV, boasting 2x Premier League winners medals, a FIFA Club World Cup, a League Cup and two FA Cups. He was also part of the England U21 side that recently won the U21 Euros and was named Player of the tournament, scoring five goals.

In a sign of the value that Liverpool places on the player and the deal, it’s understood that they have retained buy-back and sell-on clauses as part of the deal. Villa fought off interest from West Ham, Fulham and interest from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.

Liverpool have been active and big spenders in the transfer window, and with opportunities likely limited to a single minute appearance for Elliot this term, he’s opted to move to Villa Park. The attacking midfielder broke through at Fulham at just 16, but managed to accrue 149 appearances at the very top of the game at Anfield.

Villa have struggled to show creativity in our opening three fixtures, currently the only side across England’s top four divisions yet to register a league goal. The arrival of Elliott will hopefully change that, both through his creativity and ability to influence play.

Elliott brings a valuable combination of threat and incisive passing, qualities that will undoubtedly appeal to Unai Emery. His versatility and high work rate make him an appealing prospect, while consistent appearances in both the Premier League and European competitions should bolster his chances of earning a call-up to the England national team. Elliott will be certainly be aiming to make a case for inclusion in Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad if he can deliver the goods in B6.

A smart deadline day acquisition for Villa.
