In a sign of what looks to be a further shake-up in Villa’s squad, are the numerous reports that Steven Gerrard is seeking defensive reinforcements.
Whilst it remains to be seen whether Villa firm up interest in James Tarkowski, there are strong links today with rising talent Calvin Bassey.
The 22 year old Rangers defender has risen to prominence following the Scottish sides excellent run to the Europa and Scottish Cup finals.
Whilst there have been some dismissive remarks across social channels today at the latest link to Villa Park, this is not the first time that Bassey’s name has been cited by reputable sources.
There is certainly much that appeals about the Nigerian international defender, not least that he can play at either left back, centre half and in midfield.

There is also a connection to former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard, who was responsible for plucking Bassey from Leicester City in July 2020.
Rangers are likely braced (or well-placed) for a bidding war, with West Ham, Wolves and Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich interested parties. Bassey has a 10k p/week contract until 2024, but an offer in excess of £20m may prove irresistable to the SPL runners up. Chelsea have also been linked due to an expected exodus of star players this summer, but their ownership and financial situation remains unclear.
For Villa, who managed to secure Coutinho in a cut-price deal and remarkably Boubacar Kamara for nothing, a fee in the region of £20m-£25m would not appear to be problematic. We shall now need to watch and wait as to whether this transfer link develops into anything more concrete.
