Bristol City overcame Northampton Town (4-0) in their 2nd Round tie, to set up the next fixture of the Carabao Cup against Villa.
Despite making nine changes, City comfortably thrashed their youthful League One opponents.
After an early scare at Burton, Villa gradually took control with a much changed team, ultimately running out 3-1 winners courtesy of a Jack Grealish masterclass.
Villa will head to Ashton Gate for the third round, at a date and time yet to be confirmed. The entire fixture list is expected to be played out from Tuesday 22nd September, so the game will be upon Smith’s side imminently.
The third round will see a number of the top sides entering the EFL Cup competition, including teams such as Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United.
This season’s format has been changed significantly due to the impact of Covid-19 upon the domestic schedule. This means that there will be no replays or extra time for the first five rounds.
Villa were of course runners up to Manchester City (2-1) last season, for a trophy we’ve not got our hands on since victory over Leeds United in 1996.
