Villa continue to go about their summer transfer activity in shrewd fashion, today confirming that Southampton left-back Matt Targett joins the club.
The 23 year old joins in a deal widely reported to be in the region of £11.5 million pounds.
Targett, who has been capped at youth levels for England at international level, made 21 appearances for Southampton last season (63 in total).
The deal draws to an end a fifteen year association with the Saints, a club he leaves as an academy graduate.
The defender is Dean Smith’s fifth summer signing, following El Ghazi, Wesley, Hause and Jota through the door.
On Targett, Smith remarked:
We’re very pleased to have Matt join us.
He’s a player we have been looking at for a considerable amount of time.
He fits our criteria of being a young player with experience of playing in the Premier League and having the potential to develop further.
Targett now looks set to challenge experienced Welshman Neil Taylor & the versatile Kortney Hause for left back duties.
