Welcome to Monday; here’s the latest news, rumour, transfers & all things Aston Villa:

Miloš Veljković has been strongly linked to join us in a season long loan move from Spurs. In what is a seemingly endless list of reports involving Tottenham players, presumably owing to the Sherwood connection, this one appears to carry some merit. Veljković impressed at the recent U21 championships and we are in desperate need of cover in the central defensive position. Our defensive woes are there for all to see & with the likely departure of Ron Vlaar it’s essential that we not only recruit at the back, but we bring in talent. Veljković may well be a rookie at Premier League level, but he appears to carry both the attributes and promise to suggest a season at Villa would do both parties well.
Tom Carroll, previously reported to complete a permanent deal, now looks set to join on loan as well. Sherwood is again likely to dip into known quantities in the shape of Carroll who he will know inside out from his Spurs academy development days. This move could take on increased significance depending upon the outcome of the transfer window, particularly if we lose Delph to Manchester City. However, Carroll is regarded as being an adaptable players & may be recruited to give Villa the balance provided towards the end of the season by a resurgent Tom Cleverley. Additionally, Villa may not yet want to throw Gary Gardner in at the deep end & opt to rotate with Carroll who has the benefit of top flight experience under his belt having been on loan at Swansea last term.
There is still no news on the concerning media reports that Fabian Delph is set for an imminent switch to Man City. No news, is good news in this respect, particularly if the reported release clause of £8 million is to be believed. The weekend press ramped up into overdrive, fans lost their minds writing essays on forums/blogs & yet the world still turned. If it happens, it happens – the most concerning thing of all – is perhaps Fabian’s silence.

Speaking of no news, Ron Vlaar is still to make a decision on his future. Indeed, it appears that whilst there are interested parties, no-one is literally beating his door down. The Dutchman is likeable, but no the wrong side of 30 and had a torrid time at Villa with lengthy injury absenses. I suppose, whilst Villa hasn’t been the platform for him which he might have hoped, that his future may lie somewhere better than a circus like Newcastle United. However, football isn’t everything & Ron has been spending his time of late in India following up the work of a foundation which he has donated a significant percentage of his career earnings to. You can read a little about his trip here.
And in sombre news, it was announced that a relative of former Villain Marc Albrighton was caught up in the terrorist atrocity in Tunisia. This is further to news that two Walsall supporters also sadly lost their lives. The Villa Underground wishes to extend it’s condolences to the the above and all those who have lost their lives in the attack.
