Villa Appoint Former Wolves Assistant Johan Lange As Sporting Director

Villa’s hierarchy have moved swiftly to fill the Sporting Director position vacated by Jesus Garcia Pitarch on Monday.

The club desperately need to consolidate after a very challenging first season back in the Premier League, a campaign that went down to the final day, with Villa’s draw at West Ham (1-1) enough to survive.

The club had been known to be conducting a root and branch review of the £140 million spent following Villa’s promotion from the Championship in May 2019.  This review, ultimately led to “Suso’s” departure, but places huge emphasis on the importance of his replacement.

Lange also worked at assistant to Stale Solbakken during his time as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2012-13.

Villa have announced the appointment of FC Copenhagen technical director Johan Lange.  Lange had held the post for the last six years.

On the appointment Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens, Villa’s wealthy owners remarked:

“This past season we were able to navigate a very difficult transition into the Premier League and are happy with the effort to stay up. But we will not be satisfied until we achieve our goal of bringing sustainable success to Aston Villa at the top tier of European football.

“We’ve made some significant strides in building an organisation and culture that will sustain success. We made significant investments into our academy programme by upgrading our facilities and bringing in a talented leadership team. We have also significantly invested in our women’s team who achieved promotion to the top tier of women’s football.

“This is a great opportunity to improve our football operations. We’re excited to work directly with Johan and the team to strengthen our analytics, sports science, talent recruitment and player development programmes.

“We are incredibly optimistic about the future of Aston Villa and remain committed to further invest in the Club’s success.”
