The facts don’t lie.

And neither does the league table.

After 11 disappointing Championship games & having also been dumped out of the EFL cup by League 2 Luton Town, Di Matteo has received his marching orders.

This is absolutely the right decision.

Whilst to some this might represent short-termism defined, The Villa Underground takes the view that when things just don’t work out, you should change it.

Why meander on aimlessly like we did under Lambert?

Also, things are different this time.

Di Matteo was backed to the tune of £60 million pounds.  Not an insignificant sum.  That investment, on the face of it at least, appeared to be fairly robustly spent, but the manager’s inability to harness the new recruits has been glaring.

The results haven’t come – and it appears that the owner aligns to the views of many seasoned supporters – that the issue lies in the dubious tactics shown by the Italian.

It’s not desirable or a good position to be in at all.  However, it is absolutely necessary to get the right man in charge for what is a mammoth task.

For too long we have been subjected to managers without the cutting edge to see the job through.

Yes, some managers may have been stifled by Lerner austerity or the clubs inability to retain talent, but few have truly shown the guile or skill to improve our club.

The next appointment is massive, however, what’s new?

10 notable facts & failures of Roberto Di Matteo’s short lived reign:

1.  RDM was in post for just four months (124 days) – 12 games in total.  A shorter managerial stint than French flop Remi Garde.

2.  Villa have already surrendered four leads in the final five minutes of games this season.

3.  Just one win all season – a 3-0 victory over Rotherham.

4.  Villa are currently averaging just less than a point a game.  If unchecked, this could league to an undesirable & unforeseen relegation battle.

5.  Our local rivals Small Heath Alliance have DOUBLE the amount of points (20) that we currently have.  This on a fraction of the budget.

6.  We currently sit 15 points off the summit of the league, with surprise leaders Huddersfield Town handed a draw at Villa Park.

7.  Villa are currently 19th in the league, but sit 21st in the form guide based on the last 8 fixtures.

8.  64% of results have been draws.  27% defeats. 9% wins.

9.  Failed to win in last nine matches.

10.  Continued failure to win away from Villa Park.  It’s 421 days since last away win. (Bournemouth).
