The good, the bad & the ugly – another day of updates and rumour from Villa Park:
Horrible, stomach churning news that Man City are sniffing around our captain Fabian Delph. Delph was a consistent performer last season and more than played his bit in hauling us out of what seemed like an inevitable drop out of the top flight. Further, he recognised that the club stood by him through two terrible injuries & signed up for another 4 years.
Fast forward to the present and Man City have a pile of cash, a need to revamp and a English quote to fulfill. Delph is now beginning to alert people with his league and international pedigree – it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that City could test Villa’s resolve with an outrageous bid. Stranger things have happened.
The long expected signing of Micah Richards will finally be completed on 1st July when the defenders contract with Man City comes to an end. The two time Premier League champion, FA Cup winner & youngest defender at full international level joins us after a year on loan in Italy. Richards helped Fiorentina to a fourth place finish in Serie A & signs on a 4 and a half year deal. Even better, is that the 26 year old joins on a free, representing a very shrewd piece of business indeed. Welcome aboard Micah.
Yet another goalkeeper link, suggesting the increasing likelihood that Villa will freshing up the man between the sticks. Sherwood is now eyeing up Burnley’s 29 year old Tom Heaton. The former Man Utd youngster is also on the radar of Everton, Southampton & Sports Direct United.

What is it with Reading players and links to Villa recently? The latest in the mix is 26 year old Robson-Kanu. Kanu is apparently a bit of a marmite player amongst Royals fans, with indifferent league form offset against strong showings in the Cup & international level. The £2.5 million rated winger is also being pursued by our minnow neighbours West Bromwich Albion.
There could yet be another twist in the life and times of Chris Herd. Reports from Australia suggest that despite being thrown a lifeline by Sherwood, last chance saloon in fact, there is a strong desire from A League sides to take him on. Indeed, it may suit Herd to have both a return home and a fresh challenge.
Ah…and the fixtures are out! I’m undecided if it’s a good thing or a bad thing that Villa face Bournemouth on the opening day. A trip down to a tight ground, brings back uncomfortable memories of a defeat at newly promoted Portsmouth in 2003. But we are a different Villa now…aren’t we?
Alan Hutton has resumed pre-season training early, entering into a “fracas” whilst out for dinner in Scotland. The hardman wasted no time intervening when his family were the subject of abuse and pushing from revellers at a nearby amateur pub team bash. Nice work Al.
