Another day, one more out and plenty still swirling around the rumour mill – here’s the latest;

Villa have parted ways with Andreas Weimann after the Austrian spent 8 seasons with the club, having transferred from the Rapid Vienna youth set-up aged 15.  It marks an unfortunate, albeit inevitable end to a Villa career for a player who lost his way badly after early promise.

Weimann will be remembered for his industry, but will always be judged as a striker for a lack of an end product.  Whilst his fans will always point to his frequent deployment out wide, or in a supporting role, there were countless times that Andi just should have done better in front of goal.  A scapegoat, maybe, but the fact is that Villa must improve in this area & the 23 year old Austrian international’s future lies elsewhere.  Weimann joins Championship side Derby County, alongside record Villa signing Darren Bent, for a fee in the region of £2.75 million pounds.

The Andros Townsend links just will not go away.  This is very much a marmite possibility of a signing; with glimpses of quality offset against real concerns about the players consistency.  Would Townsend improve Villa?  It has to be yet, I think, maybe?  The suggestion of a fee in the region of £10-£12 million, does however provoke some consideration.  Is he worth this much?  Are there not similar, indeed, proven options out there who can be explored for similar money?

Carlos Sanchez has received widespread praise from fans and media for his match winning performance against Brazil for Colombia.  Sanchez, another marmite name among Villa fans, produced a man of the match performance marking Neymar out of the fixture.  Comparisons have been drawn to his previous exploits keeping Messi quiet in the last Copa America.  There is a skillful, talented footballer in Sanchez – but too many times he looked casual, exposed & over-run in Villa’s darkest hours of the 2014/15 campaign.  Perhaps with a competitive summer tournament, a strong pre-season & better players around him, we may yet see the best of him.
