The latest transfer news from Villa Park as Dean Smith continues to be thwarted in his attempts to sign reinforcements.
WATKINS & WILSON

Smith, who signed Watkins whilst manager of Brentford, must have expected to be bedding in new signings to the squad, but it appears that any signings will now be made decidedly late in the day.
AVFC aren’t exclusive in being frustrated during this Covid hit window, but with Villa and Brentford still £7m apart in their valuations, Smith must decide if Watkins is worth £25m. It’s understood that a bid of £18 million has been rejected.
It’s a big call for the former Walsall manager, evidenced by the fact that there are counter stories that once again link Villa with a move for Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson.

It’s also not beyond the realms of possibility that Smith is exploring multiple replacements, with 26 goal Watkins exciting but unproven in the top flight.
Wilson struggled last term, but has caught the eye over number of years on the South Coast, earning England recognition despite injury struggles along the way.
What is certain is that a game of brinkmanship can only persist for so long. Villa need to act with intent, recruiting quality that will enhance the squad, whilst not repeating the mistakes of previous regimes in wasting vast sums.
