Villa go into today’s game at Brentford a little fresher, having seen our previous game against Leeds postponed due to Covid. However, this is a fixture that Steven Gerrard will have to make do without England international and club captain Tyrone Mings. Mings will sit this one out through suspension.
On the plus side, John McGinn is back after having had to isolate, with both Traore and Trezeguet available for selection before they jet off for the African Cup of Nations Tournament. Gerrard will also be back on the touchline for Villa having been the recipient of a positive C-19 result prior to our last home game.
Marvelous Nakamba and Leon Bailey are confirmed absentees, both with long term knee and thigh injuries respectively.
This is a good opportunity to get back to winning ways for Gerrard, who has only suffered defeats against Chelsea and Manchester City since his arrival. Brentford are no mugs, but are carrying a number of injuries and will be trying to avoid a fourth straight defeat.
The hosts leading scorer Toney always looks a real handful, but then so is Ollie Watkins, who will be appearing against his former club.
Villa should be lazer focused this afternoon, with a win providing the opportunity to leapfrog a number of sides up as high as 8th. Ambitions of anything beyond that are far flung at present, with a gap of 6 points already existing to 7th.
