Aston Villa Transfer Rumour: Nicolas Tagliafico, Copa America Champion

Villa look set to be scouting for defensive reinforcements this January transfer window.

Loanee defender Axel Tuanzebe, who has seen limited game-time since his arrival from Man Utd, is expected to be recalled by his parent club. A move to Serie A side Napoli looks to be his likely destination.

Villa are also contending with interest from Watford in Kortney Hause. Hause is firmly behind Mings and Konsa in Villa’s pecking order and his game-time will be contingent on either being absent. The former Wolves man is also in the final year of a 3 year deal.

Steven Gerrard will likely be pondering Villa’s left-back spot, with Matt Targett under little pressure in the position. Targett, though likeable, suffers from inconsistent form and is routinely targeted by opposition sides down the flank. Additionally, and as Villa seek to play with a modern approach in terms of fullbacks, end product in the final third becomes important.

Villa have already been linked to Bologna FC defender Aaron Hickey, with a host of Italian, English and SPL side Celtic keeping tabs.

The latest rumour reported is a potential move for Argentine left back Nicolas Tagliafico.

Tagliafico is currently plying his trade at Dutch giants Ajax.

Whilst this is the first indication of interest from Villa, Tagliafico has been linked to Chelsea and more recently Newcastle. A paperwork issue reportedly led to the breakdown of a move to West Ham during the summer of 2021.

Tagliafico’s apparent availability will likely give rise to interest from a host of European clubs. The 29 year old has found time limited during the current campaign, playing second fiddle to Daley Blind.

Tagliafico was a part of Argentina’s successful Copa America tournament which saw the South American side crowned champions. The defender appeared 5 times, including playing an hour in the final alongside Villa’s Emi Martinez.
