Transfer Out: Joleon Lescott – Hapless defender joins AEK Athens.

After a miserable twelve months, for Villa supporters at least, “life long fan” (yeah right!) Joleon Lescott has joined AEK Athens.

Despite having made his name at Everton and won the Premier League with Manchester City twice, Villa inherited a player from West Brom far past his best.

Whilst Lescott might be forgiven for suffering the ailments that ageing brings with it [although he was only 33 when he joined…], a great number of his performances left a great deal to be desired.

Villa have had countless centre halves with reduced mobility over the years, most of whom have made up for it with a shrewd reading of the game and harnessing the wisdom that years of top flight experience bring.  Lescott will broadly stand as the exception to that rule.

Equally as dismal was Lescott’s record of off field conduct.  The stereotypical modern footballer; the former England international consistently underlined the reasons why many have a growing distaste for modern football.

Joleon was infamously overheard, alongside Brad Guzan at Wycombe, telling Villa fans to “f*ck off”.  Hardly an endearing response from the then club captain.

Lescott further enraged supporters after a 6-0 drubbing at home to Liverpool by responding to social media hounding by posting a picture of a supercar.

To top things off, the flop defender then began inviting fans to Bodymoor Heath to settle matters one to one.

Suffice to say, much was written about this at the time.

Lescott won’t be missed, none shall prop themselves at the bar in years to come, recall him fondly or wonder what might have been.  There will be no revisionism.

Lescott joins AEK Athens on a two year deal; best of luck to them with that.
