It’s Tuesday, mildly better than Mondays, but still spent wondering quite how long it will be until the proper football returns. Still, there is always fresh news, rumour and hope from Villa Park:
Yacouba Sylla is a gonner. The disappointing midfielder, farmed out to Turkey last season, has signed a four year deal with Ligue 1 side Rennes. The Mali international epitomised a recruitment policy of distinctly average footballers who looked barely capable of maintaining Villa’s top flight status. Thanks for the…memories?
The Christian Benteke, will he-won’t he, transfer conundrum has taken a twist against Villa. Manchester United have now made an enquiry which has alerted Chelsea to the possibility of losing a key target to their domestic and European rivals. If there were two teams capable of activating the £32.5 million release clause, it’s these two sides; the race to sign Benteke, having cooled in recent days, appears back on. Liverpool are out of the race, as they cannot afford a Greggs sausage roll, let alone a top Belgian striker.

On the back of announcements about Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrards earnings in the MLS next season, one name caught the eye. The name of none other than Michael Bradley. Given that Fat Frank & Slip Up Steve will earn £6m & £6.25m respectively, Bradley, will earn at least £6.5m. Whilst we Villa fans saw very little of Bradley in his half season at the club, what we did see was not particularly inspiring. Astonishing.
Still no news on the destination of Ron Vlaar. The Dutchman’s future appears set for anywhere but Villa Park. The latest stories link him to a possible move to either Mike Ashleys Sports Direct United or Sunderland. Vlaar, who for me is a defender who’s half decent, would surely not consider Newcastle United a step up to anything like the level he aspires to?
In a complete “not news” story, Fabian Delph has “revealed” he was a Leeds fan as a kid. Shock, horror..
In a change to the pre-season schedule, Villa will now face Sporting Braga instead of Bristol City on 17.07.15 – date, time and location are unchanged – full details here.
