Rumour Round-Up – Wiemann, Cleverley, Evans, Sylla, Lowton & Benteke. #avfc

It’s that time of year again, when the games dry up and tabloid hacks speculate wildly about the futures of every man & his dog.  In the mix this week:

Andreas Wiemann is said to be close to a move to Derby County.  The parting of ways seems inevitable, with the Austrian getting limited game time under Sherwood.  Despite glimmers of quality, effort and memorable goal (vs. Man City), it’s difficult to see Wiemann being in Villa’s future rebuild.  A move down a league to County seems the logical step for a player who has left much to be desired at the highest level.

Will he won’t he, Tom Cleverley?  After contrasting halves of the season, Cleverley became an important part of Villa’s recovery.  The unexpected resurgence in his form has attracted other suitors, with Everton now firmly interested.  A big decision looms for club and player alike.

Johnny Evans is a surprise link with reports Villa are interested to the tune of £10m.  Evans will likely be surplus to requirements as United continue rebuilding now they are back in the champions league.  Evans is a Northern Ireland international, but has been as suspect as any across a changeable Man Utd backline.  If the fee is accurate, it seems a premium price, which if accepted would also demonstrate yet further Villa’s unpredictable spending policy.

Yacouba Sylla has been informed that he can find another club having been on loan in Turkey last season.  Sylla, frighteningly average, is clinging to the hope of a move back to England.  Unless someone is truly desperate, the likelihood is that a stint in the French leagues looms.

Forgotten man Matt Lowton is a target for Middlesbrough.  It’s unlikely Villa will stand in his way & a move back north with increased game time will no doubt appeal.  A stunning strike against Stoke and winning the penalty against Albion in the league will adorn his Villa epitaph.

And the latest bonkers Benteke news.  Yet another agent is duped into chatting drivel about their player, raising one question; why would you allow yourself to be represented by such a muppet?  All the current reports are tipping an inevitable transfer to Liverpool.

This seems premature, especially given that Liverpool will not be able to compete with stronger European sides to his signature.  Further, can Liverpool and Brendan Rodgers afford to put all their eggs in one basket? And who could write off Sherwood pulling off a coup and convincing the Belgian that another year at Villa Park won’t kill him…?  Stranger things have happened.

Until next time, Up The Villa!
