With the news yesterday that Villa have successfully appointed a new Sporting Director, it’s reasonable to assume that between Lange and Purslow, Villa will be working flat out to improve the first team squad.
After narrowly avoiding relegation on the final day with a draw against West Ham (1-1), the club has until just the 12th of September before the 2020 / 2021 Premier League campaign begins.
The summer transfer window itself extends until October 5th 2020 as a result of the impact of Covid upon the domestic footballing calendar.
Here is the latest transfer news and rumour from Villa Park:
José Gómez Campaña
Campana is an attack minded, central midfielder, currently on the books of La Liga side Levante.
The 27 year old, currently being tracked by Arsenal, Everton and newly promoted Leeds, is reported to be also on Villa’s radar.
Although Villa have never been short on midfield options, we have certainly acquired of number of under-whelming players, many of whom appear squad fodder at best.
The midfield is an area where Villa depend upon only a handful on individuals such as Grealish, Hourihane and Douglas Luiz. Beyond these individuals, Dean Smith’s options often appeared decidedly limited. Lansbury, Drinkwater, Jota, Nakamba and El Ghazi have been plagued by either injury or lack of form.
Campana is known to be a hard working player who burst onto the scene as a Spanish Under-20 captain earlier in his career. This saw his stock sky-rocket, earning him a move to Crystal Palace in 2013. This transfer arguably came to soon, with Campana having an unsuccessful stay at Selhurst Park, but he has since rebuilt his reputation at Levante.
As further evidence of his return to prominence, Atletico Madrid, Seville and Villarreal are linked domestically. However, due to the financial outlook of clubs, the Spanish press reported that they have baulked at a fee expected to be worth in the region of £27 million pounds.
HIGHLIGHT REEL
Campana put in a Man Of The Match performance in a ‘historic’ 3-1 victory over Barcelona, contributing a goal and assist (November 2019)
