Welcome to Sunday fine people. Whilst Villa await a work permit and final clearance before announcing the capture of Idrissa Guaye – there appears to be another expensive signing on the horizon:

Reports from France are that Villa have significantly increased the original £5 million offer to a figure in the region of £9 million for Jordan Amavi. This comes as various sides monitor the French under 21 fullback and it looks as though Villa are trying to seal the deal promptly.
Capturing Amavi, a clearly talented and promising youngster would be a major coup for Villa that may hopefully go some way towards solving the troublesome left back position.
Additionally – another £9m outlay would represent a significant departure from the years of austerity that Lerner has imposed upon the recruitment at Villa Park.
Whilst merely speculation, it does raise a couple of questions.
Is Lerner looking to bolster his investment, indeed, protect it from the threat of relegation in the event he doesn’t complete a sale this summer? Alternatively, are there outside funds driving this sudden change in direction towards paying not insignificant transfer fees and wages?

Contrast this about turn with the fortunes of Carles-Gil. Having been a momentary beacon in the darkest moments of the climax of the Lambert era, Gil has found himself completely cast aside under Sherwood. It has been a head scratcher for most sat in the stands watching Villa drag themselves over the line to safety.
There is no doubt more to this than meets the eye – but few Villa fans could deny that from what Gil has shown, he appears to have the type of flair, craft and creativity that we at times badly lack. Is the guy the complete footballer, certainly not, but can we recruit better? What has Gil shown – or not shown – that warrants his complete exemption from our plans?
Gil has unsurprisingly been strongly linked in the Spanish press with a return to La Liga, the suggesting being that he’s heading to Real Betis. Sociedad, Celta & Villareal are apparently also interested. However, a major stumbling block would be Villa’s expectation of a decent fee and that Gil is sitting on a major contract until 2019. That is, assuming we want to sell him…
In other news, a link to little known 19 year old Turkish Striker/winger Ogulcan Caglayan. The youngster caught the eye in a relegated side and may be available on a cut price deal.
